ABBIcon Pro – Icon conversion and management tool
Changing an application's icon must be the foundation of Windows customization. It's been around since the first versions of the operating system. ABBIcon Pro is a large collection of icons, all neatly sorted in a simple, straightforward interface.
With a little over 7 Mb, the package can be downloaded swiftly and the installation process will take a few seconds. It won't need any firewall permissions or anything else related to your system.
The interface is an explorer window with a few extras, like a toolbar, a very basic editing section and a tree like navigation pane. All icons are grouped in folders and sub-folders you can access using the navigation pane on the left side of the main window.
You will find icons from a simple screen to movie characters or actors. Some of them you may recognize from the good old days. If you want more, you can extract an icon from a file, folder or an image. Hitting the Extract button from the toolbar will only extract the icon from a file you target in a browsing window that will show up. Other extracting options can be found in the Extract Export menu. Once you've created your icon, you can either place it in one of the already created folders or you can create your own.
The icons can be found in the program's installation folder, but why would you want to go there? That's what the interface is for. The icons are grouped according to category, making it easier to find them. Once you spotted something you want, just select it and hit the export button from the toolbar. You can save it using 17 file formats and with preset or custom resolution.
Navigating for the same icons over and over again can be avoided by adding them to a Favorites section on the bottom side of the window. Simply select an icon and click the Add button from the bottom area.
Pros:
You can find a very large number of icons, all neatly organized in folders according to their categories.
Cons:
The interface and most of the icons seem a bit old. Even so, they're still usable.
ABBIcon Pro is a properly good icon conversion and management tool that is perfectly suited for anyone who routinely deals with icons.
